A Wi-Fi connection that keeps dropping is one of the most disruptive IT problems in a business environment. Video calls cut out mid-sentence, cloud applications lose sync, and file transfers fail at the worst moments. The good news is that the cause is almost always identifiable and fixable. Here is a systematic approach to diagnosing and resolving intermittent Wi-Fi drops.
Step 1: Establish Whether It Is the Device or the Network
The first question to answer is: is the problem on one device, or is it affecting everyone on the network?
- If only one device is dropping: the problem is with the device, its Wi-Fi adapter, or its drivers — not the network infrastructure.
- If multiple devices are dropping at the same time: the problem is with the router, access point, or your internet connection itself.
Check whether colleagues on the same network are experiencing drops at the same times. If they are, skip ahead to Step 4. If it is just your machine, continue from Step 2.
Step 2: Update or Reinstall the Wi-Fi Driver (Single Device)
An outdated or corrupted Wi-Fi driver is one of the most common causes of intermittent disconnections on a single Windows device. Open Device Manager (right-click the Start button), expand Network Adapters, right-click your Wi-Fi adapter, and select Update driver. If Windows finds nothing new, visit the laptop or motherboard manufacturer’s website and download the latest driver directly.
If updating does not help, try uninstalling the device entirely from Device Manager (tick the box to delete the driver), then restarting. Windows will reinstall a clean version on reboot.
Step 3: Disable Power Management on the Wi-Fi Adapter
Windows has a habit of turning off Wi-Fi adapters to save power, which causes sudden drops that look like a network issue but are actually the OS suspending the hardware. In Device Manager, right-click your Wi-Fi adapter, go to Properties → Power Management, and untick Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
Also check your power plan: search for Power Options in the Start menu, select your current plan, click Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings, and under Wireless Adapter Settings set Power Saving Mode to Maximum Performance.
Step 4: Restart (and Reposition) the Router or Access Point
If multiple devices are dropping, the router or wireless access point is the most likely culprit. Start by power-cycling it: unplug it from the mains, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in. Many consumer and SME routers develop memory leaks or connection table overflows that only clear on restart — if this fixes the problem temporarily but it recurs, scheduled reboots (many routers support this natively) can provide a workaround while you investigate further.
Check physical placement: routers and access points should be positioned centrally, elevated, and away from microwave ovens, cordless phone bases, and Bluetooth devices, all of which operate on the 2.4 GHz band and cause interference.
Step 5: Check for Channel Congestion
In dense office buildings or business parks, nearby Wi-Fi networks broadcasting on the same channel as yours can cause intermittent drops as signals compete. Download a Wi-Fi analyser app (such as Wifi Analyzer on Android or NetSpot on Windows) to see what channels neighbouring networks are using. Log into your router admin panel and manually set the 2.4 GHz channel to 1, 6, or 11 (the only non-overlapping channels) and the 5 GHz channel to one with the least competition.
If your router is set to Auto channel selection, it may be switching channels dynamically, which can cause momentary drops. Setting a fixed channel is often more stable in a busy RF environment.
Step 6: Check Your Broadband Line
If drops correlate with complete internet loss (rather than just Wi-Fi disconnection), the problem may be at the ISP level. Run a speed test at fast.com or speedtest.net during a drop event. Log into your router and check the WAN status page for errors, retrain events, or SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) readings on DSL or FTTC connections. Contact your ISP with timestamps of outages — they can check for line faults remotely.
Step 7: Consider Upgrading Your Access Point Infrastructure
A standard consumer router is not designed for an office environment with 10, 20, or 30 simultaneous connections. If your Wi-Fi infrastructure has not been reviewed in the last three to four years, or if your office has grown since it was installed, the hardware may simply be undersized for current demand. Business-grade wireless access points from vendors such as Ubiquiti, Cisco Meraki, or Aruba offer significantly higher device capacity, better interference handling, and centralised management.
